3/11/10

Overcoming setbacks....

Well, I think the pneumonia is working it's way out.  I was able to bike 45 minutes on Tuesday and I just ran about 15 minutes outside.  Not going to lie, it hurt.  badly.  I think I have a pretty big mental hurdle ahead of me the next month.

I'm going to go to gym now and try to do some weights and core work.  I'm feeling really soft.  Game on.

2/1/10

I'm back after a sickness, vacation to Aspen and vacation to Hawaii.  With less than 200 days to go, I'm psyched to start killin' it.

I'm starting slow as I'm still recovering from this dang cold.  Biked 45 minutes on the trainer tonight.

1/30

Bike outside 1:40.  I was supposed to go between 2 and 2.5 hours.  Not sure what's wrong with me this week, but have not had the motivation to give 100% on my workouts.  Lot's of outside stress.  Lot's of excuses.

1/29

Ran 1:06 with Lauren.  Was glad to have a running partners.  I felt pretty tired and slow.  Ran at 3pm.  Ate crappy foods all day leading up to the run and I think that affected my run significantly.

1/28

Bike on trainer.
10' easy spin warmup, 30' steady aerobic, 2 x (2' climbing big gear, 1' recovery spin), 10' steady, 5' seated big gear, 5' spin

Was tired today.

Just realized I've been skipping my basic core sessions. This is important for me to pick up next week.

1/27

Morning swim with masters.  Actually felt quite good.  Swam for an hour.

1/26

Bike on trainer.
10' easy spin, 60' steady aerobic, 5' spin cooldown.

Felt fine.

1/25

Ran 5 miles with Mary.  I was supposed to bike, but was psyched to have a friend to run with, so I decided to swap days.
It felt good.  I was surprised I wasn't more tired.  It felt like we were running fast, but turns out it was only 9:20 min/mi.  That's frustrating.

1/24

4 mile run.  It hurt.  My legs were tired!  My pace was about 9:40 min/mi.  Ouch.  I was supposed to do between 4.5 and 5.  Didn't happen.  I had to walk a bit at the 3 mile mark.

This is the week that it hit me that this is going to be a tough road to September.  But,  I do feel like I'm finally getting in shape (sort of) and I'm very motivated to keep it rolling.

1/23

Big day....

Woke up...ran 20 minutes with Fritz.  Didn't feel great.  My legs were tired and not ready to run.  I haven't been running in the mornings and I think that might have had something to do with it.

1250 yard swim.  My arms were tired from Master's on Friday.  Also got bored.  I really do need masters.

2:07 Bike ride.  Outside.  It was in the low 40's and very windy.  Went up hwy36 to Neva then east to Niwot.  I bonked toward the end because I didn't have any food.  I ate a muffing between my run and swim and a protein smoothie right before the bike ride.  I guess that wasn't enough.  Otherwise it was a pretty good ride.  Andrew M. joined me.

Exhausted by the end of the day.

1/22

Masters swim class at noon at Rally.  It kicked my butt.  I used to think that swimming was my strength, but I'm starting to think that I may need to put in a bit more time in the pool.

1/21

Biked on the trainer for 1 hour.  Nice and steady.  Felt pretty good.

1/20

Did a run with Leah.  We only went about 35 minutes, which was shorter than I was supposed to go (supposed to run 4.5-5 miles).  Felt good though.  Definitely could have gone longer.

Went to the gym to swim but both pools were closed off for lessons.  grrr.  I guess I will push the swim to Friday.  I think I might ski on Saturday and move my big workout to Sunday.

1/19

55 minute run.  5+ miles.  Very easy.

Felt good.  Went with roommate.  Didn't feel winded or tired.

1/18

Trainer Ride: 10' easy spin, 10' steady aerobic, 5 x (1' Tempo -> LT at higher-cadence, 2' recovery spin), 20' steady aerobic, repeat the intervals as before, 5' spin cooldown.

Felt good.

1/11

I went to a spin class at downtown SF Crunch.  It was so weird.  I was the only person in the class wearing biking shorts.  Teacher was a total tool.

I pretty much did my own thing.  Warmed-up, rode in a harder gear, did some climbing.  I felt like I got a pretty good workout, considering.

Joining 24 hour fitness for a month to use the pool.

1/10

Woke up early, not feeling very well rested.  I would give anything for 8 hours of sleep.  Probably slept about 6 which is an improvement from the rest of the week.

It was still dark so I didn't feel safe running outside.  I jumped on the hotel treadmill.  Started feeling super nauseous at about 15 minutes.  Ran 26 minutes at 9 min/mile pace.  Had to sit for a while to try not to puke once I got off the treadmill.  Did a few sit-ups and weight machines.  Now back in bed feeling like total poo.  I hope this blows over quick.

I am going into the office soon, but really hoping to feel better this afternoon so I can sneak out for another run to do those famous San Francisco hills!  Checked out the class schedule for Crunch.  None today, but I'm hoping to hit up their spin classes this week since I don't have my bike and trainer with me.

I booked a flight to Hawaii in February, so needless to say, I'm very motivated to work hard at the moment.

1/9

In San Francisco!  first time ever.

Did my 50' run that I moved from Tuesday.  Runs always go fast when you are in a new city.  Pretty annoying having to stop at stop lights and avoid the crowds on the sidewalks.

I forgot my watch, but the Westin has little handy running maps that tell you routes and distances.  I did the 5 mile route and added a little extra.  Felt good, though slow.  I stayed on the flats, but the hills looked so tempting.  tomorrow......

Was psyched to see that there is a nice gym in my hotel and a Crunch Fitness across the street that offers a free 7 day trial pass.  Score!

1/8

I did it!  I finally went to a master's class!  It kicked my butt.  I managed to do 40 minutes of the hour long class before my arms felt like jello.  Went over the lunch hour.  I love swimming in an outdoor pool in winter, as un-green as it is.

Was planning to do a trainer ride in the evening, but found out that I had to fly to San Francisco the next morning, so i spent the night packing instead.  Will be in San Francisco for an indefinite period of time working on a project for work.  It is really hard to pack for a work trip when you don't know how long you will be gone, and need to bring biking, swimming, running and ultimate frisbee gear.

1/7

40' run.  I avoided the tails because they are still pretty muddy and icy.  I did run a hilly route through Boulder.

Really need to remember to bring my Garmin to work so I know my pace.  I felt slow, but got through it.  I can't wait until I go on a 40' run and it seems easy to me.

1/6

Evening trainer ride.  10' easy spin warmup, 2 x (15' steady aerobic, 5 x (1' big gear climbing out of saddle, 1' spin recovery)), 10' steady aerobic, 5' spin cooldown.

Felt winded on the climbs.  I also feel like I'm going to break my bike.  There have got to be better bike trainers out there.  I have the Cyclops II I think.  Don't love it.

1/5

was supposed to do a 50' run, but switched it up due to time constraints at work.  Another day with less than 4 hours of sleep.  So painful.

35' run
I didn't have my garmin, so I'm not sure my pace, but ran with Mary so felt like I went decently fast.  She definitely pushes me faster than if I was alone.

1/4

Trainer Ride:
10' warm-up
60' aerobic
5' cool down

Felt good.  Getting through season 2 of Arrested Development.

1/3/10

30 minute run with warm-up and cool-down.

time: 30.10
distance: 3.17 mi
pace: 9:32 min/mi

Didn't feel great on this run. Legs felt very heavy. Probably from 2 days of tele skiing. snowing pretty hard during the run.

1/2/10

Biked on trainer.

10' easy spin warmup, 30' low aerobic 4 x (2' 60-70rpm low-cadence strength work, 1' Rec), 15' steady aerobic, 5' easy spin cooldown. Stay seated (in aero position) on the strength intervals.

Felt good. Hopefully I push it hard enough on the trainer. I didn't feel too winded.

1/1/10

First time I've written 2010. Excited for the new year!

Woke up early and went skiing at Breck. Only did about 4 runs, but forced myself to do only tele turns for most of the day. My legs were BURNING. Great quad workout.

Didn't get in my run like I wanted to. Hopefully will get it in tomorrow. Resolution starting tomorrow is to not push off things until the next day:)

Optional masters swim today. Did not do it. Next week hoping to emphasize actually making it to masters. work should be slower which should mean more sleep and a higher likelihood that I will wake up in time for morning masters.

12/31

Was supposed to do a 40 minute hilly trail run. I went to Sanitas, assuming the other trails would be too muddy. Turns out sanitas was ice covered in many spots and muddy. I ran probably 15 minutes and hiked for about 45 minutes.

Decided just to do a run on the roads instead. Ran 30 minutes at a good pace with Mary. Actually felt good for the first time in a while.
